2005-03-16 - 6:45 a.m. The air was cold and moist as I exited my car and I looked across the vast, empty parking lot. Not a hundred feet from me a gaggle of fifteen or sixteen geese meandered around the wide-open asphalt space. Some of them stared at me wondering what I had planned for the day. I stood there for a minute and watched them walk about. I envy them with their simple lives. They eat and sleep and make sure that they are at the right place at the right time. Mostly they spend time with their families though, teaching their young life's lessons, caring for one another, passing along what they know about life as a goose, so future geese will carry on in the same tradition. And they never stray from their path. They know how important it is to head south in the winter and back north in the spring. They know when and why to mate and the importance of dedicating themselves to raising their young. Where did we go wrong? When did we stray from the path and why? I want to return. I want to go back to those times when we knew what was important and we lived our lives as the universe intended. I stood there for a moment longer. I zipped up my jacket against the cold and walked toward the big, glass building - while my family slept miles away. They'll be the people that I see the least today. I want to return.
