As I was pumping gas this morning, I watched the activity around a cop car that was parked in front of the station.

The car just sat there, with a cop inside, and then this girl in her 20's came out of the store and walked around to the passenger side of the car. It was pretty cold this morning, but she was wearing a pair of (very short) cut-off sweat pants and a heavy sweatshirt. Her hair was pulled into a lose ponytail on top of her head. She had a pretty face and a nice figure - she looked like a college student.

She kept looking around, mostly toward my car; I'm guessing it's because I was the only car at the pumps.

I went in and paid for my gas and a cup of coffee, which I have determined I'm addicted to now. As I left the store I gave in to human impulse, like a dumb ass...

...I rubbernecked.

What is it with people - we can't keep ourselves from staring at something out of the ordinary. I looked through the windshield into the patrol car and felt sorry for doing so.

The girl was looking back. She was sort of hunched down so she could look under the rear-view mirror and she stared directly into my eyes; it was the look that got me.

There was this sort of Mona Lisa smile on her face and her eyes had an intense gaze, which seemed to say, "I'm going to eat your soul." It's like she knew, in the great cosmos of life, that she was going to see me again and that she was going to somehow use me up when she did.

A taxi pulled up later and she got in, after the cop had a long discussion with the driver. She had a small suitcase with her.

Man, I sure would like to read the book about that story.
